Sun, sea and sand

Cornwall's north coast offers some excellent surfing beaches, catering for beginners and more experienced surfers alike. The area around the town of Bude hosts six such beaches, being Sandymouth, Northcott, Crooklets, Summerleaze, Widemouth and Black Rock. Also, the more popular surfing beaches of North Devon, such as Woolacombe, Croyde, Sandymere and Westward Ho! are also within easy reach of Bude.

Black Rock Beach

Situated on the south side of Widemouth Bay, which is accessible from Widemouth Sands at low tide. Black Rock has a combination of reef and beach break, which works at all tidal stages. Several rocky outcrops give Black Rock its name and is a popular surfing destination. There are plenty of parking spaces, a petrol station close by, gives easy access to the North Cornwall coastal path and miles of flat sand north towards Widemouth Bay & Bude. Dogs are not allowed on Black Rock beach during the main season.

Lifeguards patrol between May and September.

Crackington Haven
Crackington Haven

A short drive south of Bude along the North Cornwall coastal road brings you to Crackington Haven. Flanked on each side by steep cliffs, Crackington Haven offers a pub & restaurant, beach café, public conveniences and excellent parking. It is ideal for families and is also popular with the bohemian set. For surfing, Crackington Haven is sheltered from northerly winds, has a good solid wave which breaks off at high tide and also holds a good swell. Dogs are not allowed during the main season and lifeguards patrol from May- September.

Crooklets Beach
Crooklets beach

Known as 'Crookluts' locally, is home to Bude Surf Life Saving Club. Crooklets Beach is ideal for families, with level access to the sands and facilities for people with wheelchairs. The parking facilities are excellent. There is also a licenced café, surf shop, public conveniences and beach hut, deckchair and windbreak hire. Grassy downs gently roll towards a wide expanse of golden sands with lovely coastal walks to Summerleaze & Northcott beaches. Crooklets Beach is also good for beach fishing and rock pooling. For surfing and body boarding, Crooklets has hollow sandbank waves and works well on all tides. No dogs or horses are allowed during the main season. Lifeguards patrol May – September.

Duckpool
Duckpool

"A low tide right hander breaking off the rocks". Situated Close to the Devon border in the northernmost part of Cornwall, Duckpool offers great surfing, good rock pools, has ample parking, wheelchair facilities and public conveniences so is ideal for families. Duckpool is also close to Stowe Woods in the Coombe Valley, an area as popular with mountain bikers as it is with nature lovers. The surrounding cliffs offer stunning views of the North Cornwall and Devon coast. Dogs are allowed all season, no lifeguards.

Millook Haven
Millook Haven

Millook Haven is a large pebble beach situated a couple of miles south of Widemouth Bay. For surfing, Millook Haven is only for experienced surfers as the rock can prove tricky – only works over eight feet. For the non-surfer, Millook Haven is of unique geological interest and the nearby Millook Valley Woods are well worth a visit. This beautiful, quiet, cut off beach has a small parking area, no facilities an no lifeguard patrol.

Northcott Mouth
Northcott Mouth

Fast surfing on a hollow beach break on all tides. Northcott Mouth is a short drive north from Bude. At low tide there's a wide expanse of sand and plenty of rock pools. If you're on the surf, watch out for rip tides. Northcott Mouth has plenty of parking available, dogs are allowed all season and lifeguards patrol from May until September.

Sandymouth
Sandymouth

A couple of miles north of Bude is Sandymouth, which offers excellent surfing (watch out for the rip tides), the mouth holds a good swell giving good beach break with a variety of banks. At low tide there's a huge expanse of sand giving access to Crooklets Beach, around two miles away. Sandymouth also offers a licensed café and bistro, public conveniences, and ample parking. Dogs are allowed all season. Lifeguards patrol from May until September.

Widemouth Bay
Widemouth Bay

Locally known as "Widmuth" and only a short drive south from Bude, Widemouth Bay is one of the best family beaches in the south west of England. There's excellent parking, wheelchair facilities, public conveniences, beach hut, deckchair and wind break hire, surfing lessons, a café, the Bay View Hotel's restaurant for eating out, a wet fish shop if you're self catering and miles of flat golden sands. If that's not enough, Widemouth Bay is an ideal starting point for walking the Cornish coast towards Black Rock or Upton Beach. Dogs are not allowed during the main season, lifeguards patrol from May until September.

Summerleaze Beach
Summerleaze Beach

Situated close to Bude, Summerleaze Beach has plenty of parking and is close to all facilities, toilets, shops, cafés, crazy golf, beach hut, deckchair & windbreak hire, surf shop and surfing lessons. There's also lots of sand dunes along with a wide expanse of flat sand and the working sea lock which connects Bude's historic canal to the Atlantic ocean making Summerleaze an ideal spot for families to spend the day. For surfers, Summerleaze is one of Cornwall's premier surfing beaches. The harbour gives shelter from strong south westerly winds, and offers great surfing at high or low tides. Dogs are allowed all season and lifeguards patrol the beach from May through to September.

Upton Beach
Upton Beach

A beautiful secluded beach just south of Bude, one of Cornwall's gems! A narrow path leads down to this sheltered pebbly beach. It's great for rock pooling, picnicking, or just hanging out on the edge of the ocean. Upton Beach is well worth a look if you're walking Cornwall's coastal path. Dogs are allowed all year and lifeguards do not patrol this beach.
